A Business's Greatest Asset
A business's most valuable asset is its data.
Think about it for a minute. Let's say you had a fire, and you lost everything in the blaze. What would you have lost?

Your office? You can always find a new space.
Your computer? You can buy a new one.
Your inventory? You can rebuild it.

But your data? Unless you saved it somewhere, once it's gone, it's gone for good. Think of all the information in a business, and how hard it is to replace:

Customer relationship information.
Application source code
Web site contents
Engineering drawings
Accounting records
Legal contracts
Purchase orders and shipping records

Let's take this analogy one step further. Think of a business's data as their personal fortune. They could hide it under a mattress. Or they could throw it into a cave and roll a boulder over the entrance. In the first method it's accessible, but can easily be lost or stolen. In the second, it's secure but it's hard to access.

Many businesses fall into the trap of either-or thinking. Everyone is all too familiar with the story of Sony, Target, or Anthem, where hackers penetrate an inadequately protected system, threatening the security of millions of innocent customers. But many other companies make their data inaccessible to their own employees, either blocking access directly, or indirectly by making it unshareable, indecipherable, or just plain incomprehensive.

Instead of deciding between two false choices, consider a third option. Instead of a mattress or a cave, why not put your company's informational fortune in a bank? It's secure, you can access it at any time, and now it's earning interest and increasing in value.
